Nestled in the heart of the Florida Keys, Islamorada is renowned for its spectacular fishing opportunities. This past weekend, we geared up with custom RodsbyDru on the Green Giant and set off with our friends to see what we could get into.
Setting Off from Islamorada
The water was calmer than ever as we headed offshore - a nice surprise compared to the usual chop. We were happy to find it stayed like this for many days. Our target species included snapper, mahi-mahi, tuna, grouper and whatever else we find trolling and on the deep drop.
A Day of Fishing with Good Friends
We were in good company on the Green Giant with the Telenzaks, Clements, Millers, and Hoxeys. It never gets old—sharing stories, laughing at past mishaps, and reveling in the shared anticipation of the first bite.
Hooking Mahi-Mahi
It didn't take long to find the birds circling bait and tuna busting on top of the water. We found some structure floating in the water surrounded by a ton of mahi. Watching the brilliant green and yellow flashes darting below the surface, we knew we were in for a treat. Mahi-mahi are not just a joy to catch but also a delight to eat, making them a prized catch for any angler. We caught a nice amount to feed us for the weekend.
The Unexpected Barrel Fish
One of the highlights of our adventure was the unexpected catch of a barrel fish. These deep-water dwellers are not seen often, making their capture a noteworthy event. The excitement onboard was electric as we realized what we had hooked on the deep drop. Barrel fish are known for their unique appearance and challenging catch, and taste great, too!
The next day, we found several nice sized snapper on the bottom. Snapper are known for their delicious taste and vibrant colors, and we were thrilled to reel in several sizable queens and yellow eyes.
We found these guys fishing with Capt. Danny Lombardo who is also fully equipped with RodsbyDru.
The Million Dollar Rod
We were able to do a little field testing with our new project - the Million Dollar Rod!
The combination of good friends and the thrill of the catch created memories that will last a lifetime. In the end, it's not just about the fish you catch but the moments you share and the stories you create. We did just that during our Islamorada fishing trip—creating stories we'll be telling for years to come.
